3 Day tour of Kwa Zulu - Natal Midlands, Golden Gate Highlands National Park (Free State Province), Lesotho, Sani Pass (descent) - (I night stay over)
This tour commences either from Pietermaritzburg or Durban (or any other KZN Town by prior arrangement). Collection point to be agreed before tour departure.

We generally depart 8.30 am ex Pietermaritzburg (8.00 am if ex Durban). From Pietermaritzburg we follow the “old” road via Winterskloof and along the Midlands Meander main route, visiting Nelson Mandela’s capture site. Breakfast of your choice will be enjoyed at Rawdons Hotel  where after we travel via Nottingham Rd, stopping as required at various points of interest. We continue past the "Battle of Willow Grange site" (the most southerly Anglo Boer War battle site in Natal) then through Estcourt (visiting Fort Durnford and then past Colenso  where we pass the site on which the 2nd Anglo-Boer War Battle of Colenso took place. (This battle saw the British forces suffer one of their greatest and most humiliating military defeats.(1898).  From here travel along the N3 highway up Van Reenen's Pass to Harrismith in the Fee State where we enjoy lunch.

From Harrismith  we take a scenic route  to Golden Gate Highlands National Park  staying in “Self Catering Bungalows” in the Park. Here we will enjoy the scenic wonder of the Sand Stone formations and do a game drive through this beautiful Park. Possible mammal sightings are; Burchells Zebra, Black Wildebeest, Red Hartebeest, Mountain Reedbuck, Grey Rhebuck, Black Backed Jackals and Eland. Interesting birds to look out for are; Ground Woodpecker and Bearded Vulture. We will also visit the local "Vulture Restaurant".

 That evening we prepare for you a traditional South African Poitjie Kos meal (Stew of beef or chicken) cooked in a three legged pot over an open fire enjoying the serenity of this beautiful part of the World.

The next morning, after an alfresco breakfast we depart for Lesotho entering that country via  the Calendonspoort border post. From here we travel south over the "ROOF OF AFRICA" the colloquial name given to this part of Lesotho This name derives from the fact that Lesotho  is at extreme altitude in a wild and Mountainous area. (ave 3000 m above sea level) We pass through the Hamlets of Oxbow, Tlkoeng, Mokhotlong enjoying and viewing the rural way of the life the local Basutu people that has hardly changed since time immemorial.We stop for a light lunch Al Fresco and overnight at Oxbow lodge or similar accommodation.

The next day we complete our tour taking lunch at The Highest Pub in Africa at the summit of Sani Pass and then descend this precipitous pass, with its breathtaking views of KZN, stopping for photographic opportunities and just to take in the this breathless place.

We take tea or coffee at The Sani Pass Hotel and travel back to Pietermaritzburg or Durban via the farming towns of Bergville, Winterton and Estcourt, stopping at the 365ft high Howick falls on the way home.

NB11 These tours are subject to weather conditions as Sani Pass is impassable during periods of snow (usually August through September) or after heavy Summer Rains. In need an alternative route can be arranged at short notice visiting Royal National Park's Amphitheatre in the uKhalamba-Drakensberg World Heritage site en route home.
